Case study

At present we are working with two schools who have appointed staff with no training to run their archives.  Without support, it is a recipe for disaster, not only for the collection, but for the personnel given the responsibility. But with our professional support, both archives are running smoothly.

We make a site visit to each institution once a month, cleaning up accumulated records in work areas, allocating tasks to the school’s staff, checking work done, and processing material in any remaining time. While on-site we’re able to provide personalised instruction and ensure quality control. At other times when questions arise, we’re always available for consultation via phone or Zoom. With good working relations, this is an excellent scenario

Volunteer programs

Many not-for-profit organisations, clubs, and societies have loyal members and supporters who are proud of their organisation’s history and keen to participate in the preservation and maintenance of archival collections.

The History Company has many years of experience setting up and managing volunteer programs. In some situations, we have volunteers regularly working alongside us. In other circumstances, it has been more appropriate to train volunteers to run a collection by themselves with regular help from our professional advice service.

Online Group Seminars and One-to-One Consultations

The History Company runs online group seminars and one-to-one consultations on a broad variety of archival and heritage conservation topics. We speak to clubs, societies, schools, and gatherings of like‐minded enthusiasts. These events are an interesting, information-packed and a fun way to give groups access to the expert knowledge of professional archivists.

One-to-One consultations are designed for one to three participants to give your project personal attention. In these sessions, we can go deeper into a specific topic or project.

  • Topics can include conservation of family treasures
  • protecting & handling photographs
  • organising collections & storage
We love talking history and can tailor make a session to suit.
